What is the best way to clean marble or other stone?
Never use powered cleansers or abrasive pads to clean your stone. Even "soft scrub" type cleaners contain pumice and might damage your stone countertop. Never use any product that is acidic. This includes substances like ammonia or many common liquid cleaners such as Windex. You should always use sealers and cleaning products designed specifically for natural stone.
What should I consider before buying granite?
Granite is a natural stone. It is very hard and durable, heat and scratch resistant as well as easy to maintain. Granite is also very versatile when it comes to design. It comes in various colors and compositions. All stones are not exactly the same and each has unique characteristics. Sample stones are intended to be the best representation of the material, however, there may be differences in color or veining.
What is the difference between marble and granite?
Although both stones come from the earth, marble and granite are very different from each other. Granite is formed deep in the earth's mantle at extremely high temperatures. It is a very hard, resistant stone made from crystallized minerals. The marble family is formed from sediment (animal skeletons and shells, plant matter, silt, etc.) at the bottom of bodies of water. After millions of years, the sediment solidifies into stone. Due to the fact that marble's main component is calcium, it can be affected by acids such as vinegar and citrus beverages.
Should I use marble or granite for my kitchen countertops?
Marble is typically used in applications for bathroom vanity tops, Jacuzzi tops, and fireplaces. It can be used in the kitchen, but it can scratch easily and is affected by acidic substances such as vinegar and ketchup. The high-gloss of the marble countertops can also be lost as many of the chemicals etch the surface.
Granite in turn is considered the second hardest stone. Its polish is not subject to etching by household acids or scratching by knives, pots or normal use. It is also not affected by typical kitchen heat such as hot pans.
